Elementary School Supplies List
Packing up for elementary school isn’t just grabbing some pencils and sheets of paper anymore. You kind of need a whole mix of things, right? Here’s a bunch of go-to supplies kids need for classwork, random projects, whatever the teachers throw at them. I’ll break them down into sections below, toss in some examples, plus where you can actually get them so you’re not scrambling last minute.
Popular Elementary School Supplies
You see these everywhere every September:
Bright Backpacks
they are light in weight, comfortable, but most of all they are bright, which makes schooling much more enjoyable.
Colorful Pencil Cases
pencil cases colored in cartoon related character or sparkly designs to keep small things neat.
Washable Markers
sets of safe markers that come off easily and are ideal to creative projects.
Rule Notebooks
wide lined notebooks that serve as a guide to young writers in learning to write the neat copy.
Writing and Drawing Tools
Most of the day those kiddos are scribbling or doodling on something — whether it’s working on their letters or making unicorns with five legs, which, side note, I’ve seen plenty of times.
Pencils and Erasers
Just your normal HB pencils will do, and a cool eraser (especially ones shaped like animals or, uh, dinosaurs) can make them want to fix their mistakes more willingly.
Crayons and Washable Markers
You want colors that don’t fade into sad mush when they draw. Some packs look straight-up adorable too if your kid is into all that stuff.
Primary Notebooks and Pads
Those nice wide lines so they don’t write microscopic words. Great for new writers who are still figuring out spacing.
Storage and Organization
If you’ve ever found a melted crayon at the bottom of a bag, you know having places for everything matters more than you’d think.
Folders and Small Binders
These are lifesavers for keeping artwork away from the snack crumbs and keeping homework wrinkled-free. Ish.
Pencil Cases
Find one that has a favorite character, or maybe one with sequins if that’s the vibe. If nothing else, it stops the loose-marker chaos, trust me.
Child-Sized Backpacks
The big, heavy ones aren’t fun for little shoulders. Go with the mini ones made for young kids; way more comfortable.
Art and Creativity Supplies
If the classroom smells faintly of glue and paint, you’re in the right place. Art gear helps stretch their brains in different ways—and sometimes ends up in your living room floor, too.
Glue Sticks and Safety Scissors
Kids can handle these pretty well without someone panicking about chopped fingers, you know?
Construction Paper Packs
Bold sheets for all those self-portraits with glitter hair. Have a stack ready for emergencies, haha.
Paint Kits and Brushes
Sometimes these come bundled together for cheap, and you’ll probably find drips somewhere unexpected after “art time”.
Everyday School Needs
So there’s all the drawing gear, but kids need a few more everyday things if you want them set up for actual learning and general life stuff.
Rulers and Flashcards
Simple math, sight words, all of that. Rulers sometimes end up as lightsabers, but eh, part of the process.
Hand Sanitizer and Tissues
After one cough-fest in a classroom, you’ll see why everyone needs these. Some programs hand these out free for families, by the way.
Water Bottles and Lunch Boxes
Pick something spill-proof if you value your sanity. They have them covered in sharks or unicorns or whatever cartoon is hot that year.
Clothing and Extras
You can’t really send kids off without thinking about clothes too—sometimes schools expect uniforms, and then there’s gym class and whatever weather decides to happen.
School Uniforms and Daily Outfits
Try to grab multipacks if you catch a decent sale, helps big time during those frantic Monday mornings.
Sportswear and Sneakers
Doesn’t need to be pricey but should survive mud puddles and “surprise” kickball games, even if they wish they were Nike pros.
Seasonal Jackets and Hoodies
If it gets chilly, something easy to pull on. Half these disappear in lost-and-found anyway, just saying.
Budget Tips for Parents
If the whole supplies thing feels wallet-busting, don’t worry, there’s a couple ways around that:
- Scope out those back-to-school deals. Stuff goes on sale fast once August rolls around.
- Find groups in your area—lots hand out supplies no strings attached, especially if budgets are tight.
- Ordering stuff in bulk online comes in handy, and sometimes you snag better prices—or extra goodies tossed in for free.
